The opportunity to design and create comes in many forms and from many different sources. Almost a year ago I was approached by some of my neighbors to see if I would be willing to assist them in the creation and construction of a float for the 2013 Days of 47 Parade. Not only had I never been involved in a float design before, but I hadn’t really even seen that parade, nor knew how sophisticated it had become.
I was fortunate enough to work with two incredibly talented ladies, Leslie Lorimer and Michelle Walton, who really had the initial concept and vision for this creation. They were kind enough to allow me to assist them in the design and feasibility of how we could bring their artist concept sketch into a three dimensional reality.
From the commencement of the design and construction process there were many other neighbor and friends that gave of their time and talents to make this float design idea a reality. Countless hours and hundreds of individuals donated time and effort to create what turned out to be a fun, colorful and somewhat whimsical expression of art. This process climaxed by being able to display the float at the South Towne Exhibition Center and then to see it saunter along the parade route with many other float that were incredible works of art.
This experience has been very similar to that of assisting our clients in the creations of their Office or Retail Building, their Residence or Vacation Retreat. The process of understanding the concept of what “it wants to be,” to defining its scalable size, shape and materials, to documenting those decisions into two dimensional design documents that assist everyone to work together to bring the three dimensional reality into fruition.
Also similar is the real joy of the art comes in the process as much as the final outcome.
